Stuart was settled in the 1870s and, between 1893 and 1896, was known as Potsdam, after the German city that brothers Otto and Ernest Stypmann came from when they arrived in 1892 — they built their early fortune growing pineapples on land that is now Stuart's historic downtown. When the Florida East Coast Railroad arrived, the community took the name of Homer Hine Stuart Jr., another early settler. The city incorporated in 1914 and was chartered in 1925.
Today Stuart has 17,425 residents per the 2020 census and is the seat of Martin County, one of five counties on the Treasure Coast — a stretch of Florida's Atlantic coast named after a Spanish treasure fleet that sank in 1715.
Since the late 1930s, the Stuart Sailfish Club has promoted sport fishing in the area, and in 1957 the city formally adopted the title 'Sailfish Capital of the World,' which it still holds today. Its historic downtown, established in the late 1800s along the St. Lucie River, is home to the Lyric Theatre (1926), the Stuart Heritage Museum and an active mix of restaurants and shops.
Martin County was named one of the fastest-growing industrial markets in the U.S.: Daher Aerospace assembles TBM and Kodiak aircraft in Stuart, and Cleveland Clinic Martin Health sustains healthcare employment. Stuart sits 106 miles and about 1 hour 42 minutes from Miami — a different market and a different pace of life, not an extension of the city.
Stuart has 86 active condo listings on the MLS today, none of them new construction — it's an entirely resale market. The median price is $337,000, with a median HOA of $820/month and a median year built of 1983.
That profile puts Stuart among the Treasure Coast's consolidated markets: not the region's lowest entry price, nor a luxury enclave like Palm Beach, but a mid-tier market sustained by boating tourism, sport fishing and a growing aerospace and healthcare economy.
