Planned city in southwest Broward County, bordering the Everglades

Living in Weston

Weston began in the 1950s when industrialist Arthur Vining Davis, Arvida's first owner, took control of roughly 15,000 acres west of Fort Lauderdale. The community was first called Indian Trace; the name changed to Weston in the early 1980s, and the first homes in Arvida's development were completed in 1984.

After a feasibility study launched in 1994, residents concluded it was better to incorporate as their own city than to annex to a neighboring municipality, so the tax dollars generated would stay under local control. Weston formally incorporated on September 3, 1996, and its first mayor and commissioners were elected on June 3, 1997.

Today Weston has 68,107 residents per the 2020 census (estimated at 70,674 for 2024), across 26.1 square miles in southwest Broward. It borders Sunrise to the northeast, Davie to the east, Southwest Ranches to the south, and the Everglades to the north and west — the city limit literally ends where the national park begins.

It hosts operations of Cleveland Clinic Florida, DHL, Royal Caribbean, Marriott International, Abbott Laboratories, Mondelez, Rockwell Automation, American Express and UKG, and has the highest concentration of Venezuelans of any U.S. city: in the 2000 census it reached 9.4% of the population, an ecosystem that today sustains businesses, schools and social life in Spanish within the same city.

Weston has 109 active condos for sale on the MLS today, none of them new construction — it's an entirely resale market. The median price is $325,000, with a median HOA of $700 a month and a median year built of 1980.

That profile places Weston among the higher-purchasing-power planned cities of southern Broward: a median household income of $122,774 sustains a stable resale market, without the new-inventory pressure found in coastal zones.
