The island was named after Paris Singer, son of sewing-machine magnate Isaac Singer, who originally developed it as the 'Palm Beach Ocean' project alongside architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s. The plan included the luxury Blue Heron Hotel, which received a $2 million investment (about $28 million in 2018 dollars) but was left unfinished when Florida's land boom collapsed. Its shell was razed in 1940 and was eventually replaced by what is today the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort.
