North Palm Beach was born in 1954, when businessman John D. MacArthur bought 2,600 acres of land — former mangroves and farmland once owned by Harry Seymour Kelsey and Sir Harry Oakes — for $5.5 million. Full-scale development and incorporation as a village happened almost simultaneously, in 1956, the same year the community won the National Association of Home Builders' award for best planned community in the country. Today it operates under a council-manager government.
