Weston began in the 1950s when industrialist Arthur Vining Davis, Arvida's first owner, took control of roughly 15,000 acres west of Fort Lauderdale. The community was first called Indian Trace; the name changed to Weston in the early 1980s, and the first homes in Arvida's development were completed in 1984. After a feasibility study launched in 1994, residents chose to incorporate as their own city rather than annex to a neighboring municipality, and Weston was formally incorporated on September 3, 1996.
